Regarding the new Land Rover Discovery, lead designer Gerry McGovern had this to say:
“I hate roof racks, But if people want them they can go ahead and buy one and ruin the design.”
Mr. McGovern...are you aware what product it is you are designing by chance?
Seriously man.

Wow. That is a stunning display of lack of awareness of a brand’s history.

You say that like people buying new LRs are willing to take it someplace where AAA won’t send a tow truck.

perhaps he thinks rover owners should be more rough and tumble and not even need the rack, just tie it on the roof, like bare back horse riding

“now myself? I just prefer clean, sensual sensation of loading up all my ice cold drinks in my seat and plopping a good 5 lbs bag of ice into my crotch...THATS how to you travel in my books.”

Land rovers are jewellry now. Yeah some of them are still very capable but theyre more of a fashion statement than ever.

The back of the new was is already ruined, maybe this guy should have considered the image Land Rover buyers want instead of designing some ugly crossover looking thing.

But seriously, look how proudly he stands next to that automotive abortion.

yes, I related very much to his quote.
it should be noted, that creating this image and sending it to your wife when she asks if you’d like to take a trip is not an acceptable action

I’d like to strap him to the front of my Land Rover’s bumper and see what’s the biggest tree I can push over. Nonse wanker...

The image they want is “the vehicle I am driving through suburbia was expensive.”

I wonder if Land Rover have some hard numbers on the number of owners who take their vehicles off road like how McLaren have track day stats.
I mean they keep cramming in more off roading tech into them, they are able to wade through more and more water on each new release and that terrain dial of theirs seems to get bigger ever time I see it but given how expensive they are getting, I have to wonder what the actual % is.
Still I look forward to whatever PR stunt they put to show how much better the newer Rovers are off road since they’re always fun.
I wonder how many people would tick the winch option just because they want the most expensive Rover.

The numbers that I’ve heard are that the 3rd owners are the ones that take them off road and they know it. Which is why it confounds me so much with this fashion > function mentality since the IDEA of adventure is clearly what LR is selling these days. What good is the capability for new buyers if they don’t see it and get romantically wistful and start daydreaming of an adventurous life they wish they could live. I mean...whats romantic about a smooth crossover shape?

Well he has a point. Roof racks are objectively terrible.

if you design anything but Discoveries...then yes...I would accept this response.

When I was contemplating an older SUV/truck, the gf wanted me to look at the Disco. She loved how it looked particularly after seeing one with a roof rack.
Upon seeing the new one driving around the city one day, she had a sad.

He kinda tried:
Not as good as the ones you posted though.

I’m just not sure Im ready to live in a world where a Discovery is deemed to be less because of a roof rack...least of all from its father.

Damn, those discoveries look great... But I still want a Range Rover instead. And make it all kitted out for off road.
